It can be easy to convince yourself that you do not have time for self-care or even minimize the benefits or need for it altogether. I was right there with you, rolling my eyes, at some of the suggestions I would hear thinking there was no way that it would make a difference.
But here's the thing: you KNOW what it feels like NOT to do these things. Why not give it a shot and see if they help you?
Here are some tips to help you find moments of relaxation and care for yourself, even when your schedule is packed:
Breathe Deeply
When you have a few spare minutes, such as waiting in line or sitting at a red light, take some deep breaths. Inhale through your nose and exhale slowly through your mouth. Deep breathing is instantly calming and can help relieve stress and tension.
Hydrate and Fuel Right
Remember to drink water regularly throughout the day. Dehydration can lead to fatigue. Also, pack healthy snacks to avoid an energy crash. Fruits, nuts, yogurt and string cheese are easy grab-and-go options. Fueling your body right will give you sustained energy for busy days.
Smile and Focus on Gratitude
When you start to feel frazzled, turn to humor! Tune in to a funny podcast or a quick funny video. Smiling releases feel-good hormones that instantly improve your mood. Also, take a moment to pause and list a few things you're grateful for. Appreciation puts problems in perspective.
Turn on Some Music
When you have a long commute or chore to do like cleaning, turn on your favorite upbeat playlist. Music is proven to relieve stress and boost endorphins.
Give Yourself a Minute
Set a reminder on your phone to take mini "you breaks" once or twice a day. Whether it's enjoying 60 seconds of silence with your eyes closed or stretching your muscles, give yourself the gift of a moment just focusing on you.
Prioritize Sleep
Aim for 7-9 hours of good quality sleep per night. Being well-rested will give you more energy for your day and lower your stress levels.
Self-care doesn't need to take a long time or disrupt your schedule. Making small changes like these daily can help you function at your best, even on hectic days. Focus on you - you deserve it!
